What is a tip?
A tip (also called a gratuity) is a voluntary payment made to service workers — most commonly restaurant servers, bartenders, delivery drivers, and others in hospitality — on top of the bill. In the United States, tips form a major part of many service workers’ earnings, which is why tipping percentages there are higher than in most other countries.
Tipping customs vary widely. In the US, 15–20% is the standard restaurant range. In much of Europe, a service charge is often included and small additional tips are optional. In Japan, tipping can even cause confusion. When traveling, a quick check of local custom matters more than any calculator.
How to calculate a tip
Convert the tip percentage to a decimal and multiply by the bill. An 18% tip on a $48.50 bill is 0.18 × $48.50 = $8.73, giving a $57.23 total. The quick buttons above (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) cover the standard range — or type any custom percentage.
For mental math, anchor on 10%: move the decimal one place left ($48.50 → $4.85), then double for 20% ($9.70) or add half for 15% ($7.28). Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the after-tax total simply adds a little extra.
How to split a restaurant bill
For equal splits, divide the grand total (food + tax + tip) by the number of people — the calculator shows “each pays” and “tip each” automatically. For unequal orders, use proportional shares: divide each person’s items by the group subtotal, then multiply the grand total by that share.
Proportional split example
Always check for auto-gratuity on parties of six or more — if a service charge is already printed on the bill, that is the tip, and anything you add is extra.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate an 18% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.18. On a $60 bill, 0.18 × $60 = $10.80, for a $70.80 total. The calculator above does this instantly and splits it per person.
What is a standard tip for good service?
In the US, 15% is a minimum for sit-down service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 20–25%+ rewards exceptional service. Customs vary by country — check local norms when traveling.
Do you tip on tax or the pre-tax total?
Traditionally the pre-tax subtotal, since tax isn’t service. Tipping on the after-tax total is also common and adds a little extra. Either is acceptable.
How do you split a bill evenly?
Add tax and tip to get the grand total, then divide by the number of people. For unequal orders, split proportionally: each person pays their items’ share of the subtotal applied to the grand total.
What is auto-gratuity?
An automatic service charge (often 18–20%) many restaurants add for large parties. Always check for it before adding your own tip so you don’t tip twice.
